DRS system to be changed in IPL 2018

NEW DELHI: After plenty of debate, the BCCI seems to have cleared the way for the DRS (Decision Review System) to be implemented during the 2018 edition of the IPL. The Board, which for years had been strict in their stance against the use of the referral system, finally embraced the technology during England's tour of India in 2016 and are now keen on trying it out at the 11th edition of the Indian Premier League.

According to a media daily, the BCCI had been pondering over it for a while before finally giving it a go ahead.

"The BCCI was keen to have DRS on board since quite some time but it was only this year we felt we should go ahead with it for the IPL. We have the best of all other systems in place, so why not DRS? Anyway we have been using it for India’s international matches for over a year and a half now," the daily stated while quoting a BCCI official.

The report further said that last December the BCCI shortlisted 10 local umpires who will be officiating in the IPL and conducted DRS sessions for them in Vizag. The program was led by Denis Burns, the ICC umpires' coach Denis Burns and umpire Paul Reiffel, who shared insights about DRS with the officials.

"As local umpires are being hired for the IPL, the board had called us to be briefed about the system. We were told that the board will be using DRS in IPL and they wanted us to get used to the technology," one of the domestic umpires who attended the session said.
